Librarian Liz Von Nagy transformed the Papillion La Vista High School library into a restaurant-looking type ambiance on October 24 for a "Book Tasting Cafe".
The cafe was part of Teentober, a month-long initiative to get teenagers excited about reading.
Von Nagy held a notepad in her hand as she greeted students with soft music playing in the background, a fire projected on a screen, and checkered tablecloths covering tables.
She led students to the tables and asked to take their "order", but the students didn't order food, instead they ordered books.
Some students, who didn't know what type of books they wanted, listened to Von Nagy's recommendations. She would grab books from different book genres off the shelves and let the students scan the books to "taste them". If they didn't like the book, the students would order a different one. Once they found the book they liked, they checked it out.
On an average day, students check out between 16 to 20 fiction/nonfiction books a day (to read for fun - not counting the books checked out for classes), but on the Book Cafe Day, the library circulated more than 55 books students checked out to read for fun.
