Students at Bell Elementary School collected 137 lbs of books to donate to the Open Door Mission. The contribution beats 2018's donation of 135 lbs of books.
The school collected the books through a book swap that started on April 29 and ended on May 10. How it worked: Students gathered up their gently used books and brought them to the school. For every three books the students brought in, they got to pick out another book to read at the book swap. This way, every student at Bell Elementary had the opportunity to go home with a book they picked out.
"The fact that we had this many books after each student was able to choose at least one new book for the summer, those who donated were able to get more depending on how many books they donated, says a lot about their generosity," Becky Medcalf said of the donation.
Open Door Mission is a non-profit that works to break the cycle of homelessness and poverty.
