NJROTC inspection recognizes student cadets for accomplishments
The Navy Junior ROTC program at Papillion-La Vista South High School held its annual Pass & Review program on Thursday, Dec. 8, with guest inspector Cmdr. Joe Hankins, commander of the Navy Area 3 NJROTC.
Following an inspection, cadets marched into position as eight platoons, posted colors and had drill demonstrations from regulation, unarmed and armed exhibition teams.
Awards were handed out following the demonstrations. Cadet Joseph Jaramillo received the Academic Excellence Medal, while Cadet Dylan Obenschain earned the Marksmanship Badge. Nathan Biegel, Christopher Conboy and Austin Lubbers were promoted to the rank of cadet seaman (E3).
Eighteen cadets were awarded Exemplary Personal Appearance honors: Jack Meling, Rocio Molina, Christian Harrison, Jesus Najera, Marcus Pascal, Branden Godin, Eric Spencer, Sage Hamilton, Thinh Vu, Michael Biegel, Nate Kelly, Rylie Herrenbruck, Tyler Thornberg, Kim Barlow, Ethan Morgan, Luke Sumpter, Austin Lubbers and Abby Lyons.
So far this year, the NJROTC cadets have performed more than 1,200 community service hours toward a goal of 2,500 hours by this May.
The orienteering team placed third in the Greater Omaha NJROTC Challenge, while the athletic team placed second in the Kansas City NJRTOC Athletic Challenge.
The color guard team conducted nine ceremonies for Veterans Day and 31 programs so far in the community. The academics team was one of 66 teams, out of 619 units nationally, to make the second round of the NJROTC National Academic Challenge.
