Monarch Grad's Commissioning Ceremony Honors Impactful Elementary School Teacher, 5/20/2024

In a heartwarming display of gratitude and appreciation, Monarch graduate Matthew Schwartz, who, on May 13, 2024, graduated with distinction from Washington University in St. Louis, with a Bachelor’s of Science degree in Computer Science, celebrated his U.S. Army commissioning ceremony with a very special guest - his elementary school teacher, Mrs. Lori Busch.

Matthew, following in the footsteps of his father Gerry and his brother Travis, both Monarch graduates, has embraced his family's proud military tradition. Recognizing the profound impact Mrs. Busch had on Matthew's early education and personal growth, the Schwartz family went above and beyond to ensure her presence at this milestone event. Gerry and his wife Laura arranged for Mrs. Busch to come to St. Louis, where she had the honor of pinning one side of Matthew's 2nd Lieutenant (2LT) rank during the commissioning ceremony.

Mrs. Busch, who taught Matthew in kindergarten and first grade, played a crucial role in shaping his foundational years. The Schwartz family firmly believes in acknowledging the significance of educators and the lasting influence they have on their students' lives.

Schwartz and Busch

“Teaching can be such a rewarding profession, but after students leave a teacher’s classroom, the teacher rarely gets to see the impact they have made. We have been blessed with the PLCS teachers who have impacted our boys. Laura and I decided that we want to include those who have made the greatest impact in important milestone events. For this commissioning we easily could have chosen Kris Zey, Heather Svehla, Becky Hoch, Shawn Blevins or Randy Huebert. Lori Busch however, set the foundation for intellectual curiosity and a lifelong pursuit of academic excellence. Again, we are just so grateful for all of these amazing teachers.”

This touching gesture serves as a reminder of the enduring bond between students and their teachers, and how the impact of an exceptional educator can resonate throughout a person's life. As Matthew embarks on his military career, he carries with him not only the support of his loving family but also the enduring influence of an extraordinary teacher who believed in him from the very beginning.
