Evelyn Richart wins All Stars award at Battle of the Books in Washington D.C.

Walnut Creek Elementary 5th grade Student Evelyn Richart received an All Stars Award at the national Battle of the Books on March 31 in Washington D.C. 

Battle of the Books is a national competition held at Gallaudet University in Washington D.C. The purpose of the Battle of the Books is to promote literacy amongst Deaf and Hard of Hearing middle school students; promote a spirit of academic competition and good sportsmanship, and to encourage critical thinking skills amongst middle school students.

According to Gallaudet's website, the competition has three divisions, according to literacy levels, and includes multiple choice and short answer questions from the books as well as a presentation-style question and answer portion. There are three parts to the competition: the preliminary competition, the playoffs, and the national competition. 

Nebraska North, the team Evelyn competed with made it to the quarterfinals in the national competition in Washington D.C.

Nebraska North ultimately lost 42-39 to Rocky Mountain Deaf School.

However, she did receive the honor of being named an "All Star" along with seven other competitors in the "Buff Division". The All Star medal recognized players who portrayed all-around knowledge, great leadership, sportsmanship and fellowship throughout the weekend.
