Students create cards thanking veterans for their service
PLHS students visited G. Stanley Hall, Hickory Hill, La Vista West, Parkview Heights, Portal and Rumsey Station elementary schools between Wednesday, Nov. 9, and Friday, Nov. 11. In each classroom, they read a short book about veterans and walked students through the art project.
Teacher Stephanie Kimball, the Student Council sponsor at PLHS, says the card will be collected for distribution to Sarpy County veterans.
The project is only one of many ways Papillion La Vista Community Schools students are giving back to veterans in celebration of Veterans Day. Assemblies were held at many buildings to invite veterans to be recognized in person for their service.
For one example, Maj. Gen. Heidi Brown, director of global operations at U.S. Strategic Command, spoke Thursday morning at Papillion-La Vista South High School. Dozens of veterans were recognized by students during a presentation Friday afternoon at Walnut Creek Elementary School.
At Liberty Middle School, which is marking its first Veterans Day celebration, students and staff created a display of stars to recognize all of the veterans they personally know at the school.
