La Vista West students take Red Ribbon Week pledge to stay drug free
Schools across the Papillion La Vista Community Schools celebrated Red Ribbon Week recently with theme days, pledges to stay drug free and special activities.
Most schools in Papillion La Vista held their activities last week in conjunction with the National Red Ribbon Week, which ran Oct. 23 through Oct. 31. The national campaign has been organized since 1985 by the National Family Partnership to raise awareness of the damage caused by drugs in America.
Students were asked to take the Red Ribbon Week pledge “to grow up safe, health and drug free” through understanding drug abuse, respecting themselves and spreading the word to friends and family about the importance of a drug-free, healthy lifestyle.
Red Ribbon Week is a reminder to our community to be aware of the consequences of substance abuse. Parents also are encouraged to talk to their children about the dangers of drugs and underage drinking.
Schools across the Papillion La Vista Community Schools celebrated Red Ribbon Week, with La Vista West Elementary School having theme days Oct. 24-28. On Thursday, Oct. 27, students at La Vista West had a special visit from the Nebraska Regional Poison Control Center. In this picture, poison control educator Joan McVoy, a registered nurse, right, holds up a picture while Pinkie the Elephant - played by sixth-grader Liz Keller - holds "happy" and "sad" buckets as preschool and first-grade students decide whether the depicted substance is safe or a poison.
