Students welcomed back to first day of school
Students inside Carriage Hill Elementary School begin their classwork on the first day of school on Tuesday, Aug. 15.
Another year is underway at Papillion La Vista Community Schools as chatter and laughter fill school buildings once again this fall. The start of school began for most students on Tuesday, Aug. 15th. However, all sophomores, juniors and seniors returned Wednesday, Aug. 16th.
Tuesday morning at La Vista West Elementary, students lined up outside of the building eagerly awaiting a return the classroom. The school's new principal, DerNecia Harris felt especially excited. “We’ve been planning all summer for the return of our La Vista West students,” said Harris. “My staff and I are eager to get this year underway.”
Harris joins Papillion La Vista Community Schools from OPS this year. Jen Carson at La Vista Middle School and Matthew Hilderbrand at Patriot Elementary are also new building principals this year, welcomed in from outside the District. Dr. Troy Juracek moved to Liberty Middle School as the new principal for 2017-18 after Brent Holder's retirement last year.
For 17-18, student enrollment numbers were up over the previous year with 349 new students added to the District. During the summer break, over 100 new teachers, paraprofessionals and counselors were hired and trained, as well. The successful applicants were selected out of the nearly 3,100 who applied to PLCS.
