Sixth Grade HAL Students Design Future Cities Built to Withstand Wildfires, 10/1/2026

Sixth grade students in the PLCS High Ability Learner (HAL) program recently took on one of the most pressing challenges facing communities around the world: wildfires. In their Future Cities project, students worked in teams to design cities capable of preventing, protecting against, and recovering from wildfire events.
The project began with research. Teams investigated how wildfires impact communities and explored the ways cities can prepare for and respond to these disasters. Using what they learned, students brainstormed creative and innovative solutions for how engineering and technology could help make future communities safer and more resilient.

Teams then brought their ideas to life by designing and building physical models of their solutions. Each model demonstrates how students' ideas could be incorporated into a future city to help communities prepare for, withstand, and recover from wildfires. Moving from research to brainstorming to a tangible prototype gave students a meaningful look at how engineers approach complex, real-world problems.
Throughout the experience, students practiced research, collaboration, creative problem-solving, engineering design, and communication, all while learning to think like engineers designing solutions for the future. The Future Cities project reflects the district's commitment to providing high ability learners with challenging, authentic opportunities that stretch their thinking and prepare them to tackle the problems of tomorrow.
