Papillion Middle School Band Director Named Finalist for 2027 Nebraska Teacher of the Year

Zac Konrad, band director at Papillion Middle School, has been named one of three finalists for the 2027 Nebraska Teacher of the Year, the Nebraska Department of Education announced.

Konrad was previously honored as Papillion La Vista Community Schools' 2025 Secondary Teacher of the Year, which advanced his name to the state's selection process. As an Award of Excellence Teacher, he now stands among the top educators in Nebraska and is eligible to be named the state's official Teacher of the Year.

Konrad leads several ensembles at Papillion Middle School, including class hour bands, the Titan Jazz Group, and the Cadet Jazz Group, and coordinates student participation in competitions, concerts, and honor band events. He also serves on the PLEA board, is an active member and judge for the Nebraska State Bandmasters Association, and has mentored student teachers throughout his career.

Those who know him best point to something harder to measure than any title. "His relationships with all members of the Papillion Middle School community are built on respect and collaboration," reads his nomination, which also noted that former students often return years later just to visit, many saying no other educator has matched his influence on them.

A colleague and parent of one of Konrad's students, described what makes him stand out. "I've watched Mr. Konrad draw kids into band and not only teach them to play instruments, but to also encourage their uniqueness," she wrote. "He meets kids where they are and builds them up from there... he keeps students engaged and builds a confidence in them that they carry even as they move on in life."

Current students feel it too. "Mr. Konrad is attentive and always wants the best for the student, and helps them improve," wrote a student in his program. "He is always looking for the best in you, and helps you be a better musician, and student in general. Mr. Konrad is the best teacher I have ever had."

Konrad will now go through an interview process with the Nebraska Application Review Committee, which will select the 2027 Nebraska Teacher of the Year from among the three finalists.
