Walnut Creek Fourth Graders Develop Invention Pitches, 12/30/2025
Jackie Vote

Fourth grade students at Walnut Creek Elementary are thinking like entrepreneurs after completing an invention unit that challenged them to identify problems and design creative solutions. The project guided students through the inventor's process, from initial concept development through final presentation, culminating in pitch presentations delivered to both classmates and family members.

The invention unit connected students to real-world problem-solving processes used by engineers, designers, and entrepreneurs. Students began by studying famous inventors and their contributions before turning their attention to identifying problems in their own lives that could benefit from innovative solutions. Each student developed a detailed pitch that explained the problem their invention addresses and how their design provides an effective solution. This process required critical thinking about user needs, practical functionality, and clear communication of complex ideas.

After presenting their inventions to classmates, students refined their speaking and presentation skills by delivering pitches to family members. This multi-stage presentation process mirrors authentic business practices while providing students with opportunities to practice public speaking in progressively more challenging settings. The experience of presenting to different audiences helps students adapt their communication style and respond to questions about their creative work.

The invention project demonstrates how PLCS elementary programs integrate creativity, problem-solving, and communication skills into academic instruction. By positioning students as inventors and innovators, the unit builds confidence and encourages the type of creative thinking that will serve Walnut Creek Wildcats throughout their educational journey and beyond.
