Student Success Through Community Support
Christopher Villarre

“Cooperation BEST isn’t just a partnership program; it’s a powerful network that directly enhances student learning and opportunities.”

Priscilla Petersen is the Coordinator of Cooperation BEST, a Papillion La Vista Community Schools program with the aim to connect community organizations to schools in order to prepare PLCS students for the future.

“Our partners help bring classroom lessons to life by providing real-world experiences, mentorship, career exploration, and support for school events and initiatives,” Petersen explains. “Whether they are hosting students, speaking in classrooms, sponsoring activities, or serving in advisory roles, these partners play a major role in preparing students for their futures.”

Founded in 1995, Cooperation BEST has just marked 30 years, a celebration that included several original partners. One of these thirty-year partners is Pinnacle Bank.

Jill Govier, Vice President and Treasury Management Officer at Pinnacle Bank, has been personally engaged in student success through Cooperation BEST since 2006.

“One of the most meaningful projects for me has been the data analysis projects, which I have supported since 2008,” Govier reflects. The direct classroom partnership connects students in Integrated Math class at Papillion La Vista High School to businesses for targeted research projects. Student groups meet with business representatives to learn about their goals so they can organize and conduct their own research. At the conclusion of the project, students present their data and analyses to the businesses.

“Watching students connect classroom learning to real-world situations has been inspiring. Their final presentations each year showcase not only their hard work but also the powerful bridge between education and career readiness.”

Evy Akpan, Pinnacle Bank Assistant Vice President and Branch Manager, supports the school district in a wide variety of areas while relying on her skills, resources, and perspectives in a community business to enhance student success.

“As a Cooperation BEST partner, my priorities center on creating meaningful impact for students through financial literacy workshops and Teammates mentoring,” says Akpan. “I aim to equip students with practical money management skills that prepare them for real-world success. When they see the real-world benefits, they’re more likely to embrace the knowledge and use it beyond school.”

Akpan’s experience working with students allows her to represent student voice in her position serving various PLCS committees, while fostering conversations centered on student needs.

“When businesses partner with schools, they help build a pipeline of career opportunities for students, provide mentorship, and offer resources that allow school programs and activities to reach more students,” Akpan explains. “The ultimate goal is a unified community where opportunities are accessible, students are prepared for the future, and businesses contribute to long-term success for everyone.”

“Student success is truly a shared effort, and our partners make an incredible impact,” concludes Petersen. “I’ve been impressed by the genuine commitment our business and community partners have to our schools. People are always eager to help, connect, and create opportunities for students.”
