Liberty Middle School and Papillion Middle School students came together last week for an exciting game of Unified basketball, showcasing the power of inclusive athletics in action. The friendly yet competitive matchup brought together students with and without disabilities to compete side-by-side, demonstrating teamwork, sportsmanship, and mutual respect on the court.

Unified sports programs create meaningful opportunities for students of all abilities to participate in athletic competition together. By pairing athletes with and without intellectual disabilities on the same teams, these programs break down barriers and create genuine friendships through shared athletic experiences. Students develop not only physical skills but also leadership abilities, communication techniques, and an understanding of diverse perspectives that will serve them throughout their lives.

The basketball game exemplified PLCS's commitment to creating inclusive environments where every student can participate, compete, and belong. Unified sports programming aligns with research showing that inclusive athletic opportunities improve social skills, increase school engagement, and build empathy among all participants. For students with disabilities, these programs provide access to competitive sports experiences that might otherwise be unavailable, while students without disabilities gain valuable experience working collaboratively with peers of varying abilities.

PLCS continues to expand opportunities for students to engage in Unified sports and other inclusive programming across the district, reinforcing the belief that every student deserves the chance to be part of a team and experience the joy of athletic competition.
