Jackie Vote

Students in the Patient Care pathway of the Health Systems Academy are gaining hands-on experience with fundamental healthcare procedures that prepare them for immediate entry into the medical field. During a recent class session, students Leah and Kaylee demonstrated their proficiency in providing gentle but thorough bed baths and safely transferring a weak patient from bed to wheelchair using proper lifting strap techniques, showcasing the practical skills they're developing through this comprehensive career academy program.

The Patient Care pathway offers students an accelerated route to healthcare careers through rigorous, real-world training. In their first year, students work toward earning their Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) license, a recognized credential that qualifies them to work in healthcare settings immediately upon graduation. This achievement represents significant professional development for high school students, as CNA licensure typically requires completion of state-approved training programs and successful passage of competency examinations. The second year of the program advances their training further with clinical rotations where students work directly alongside healthcare professionals in actual medical facilities, gaining invaluable experience in patient care, medical protocols, and professional healthcare environments.

The hands-on nature of the Patient Care pathway ensures students understand not just the technical aspects of patient care, but also the compassion, attention to detail, and communication skills essential in healthcare professions. Skills like proper bathing techniques and safe patient transfer methods are critical for maintaining patient dignity, preventing injury, and providing quality care. By practicing these procedures repeatedly in a supervised educational setting, students build the confidence and competence needed to perform them effectively in real clinical situations.

PLCS's Health Systems Academy exemplifies the district's commitment to providing career-focused education that opens doors to high-demand professions. By offering pathways like Patient Care, the district ensures students graduate not only with a diploma but with professional certifications and practical experience that position them for immediate success in the healthcare industry.
