Health Systems Academy Students Explore Genetics Through DNA Supertaster Analysis, 10/23/2025

Students in the Biomedical track of the Health Systems Academy are gaining hands-on experience with genetic testing by analyzing their own DNA to identify the presence of the "supertaster" gene. This gene determines whether individuals perceive certain foods, such as brussels sprouts and cilantro, as having intensely bitter or soapy flavors. The multi-day laboratory exercise combines molecular biology techniques with real-world applications, giving students practical experience with professional scientific equipment and procedures.

The DNA extraction process began with students swishing salt water to collect cheek cells, then preparing gels to run their DNA samples. "We prepared gels to run our DNA to see if we have the taster gene," explained Kaleigh, a senior at Papillion La Vista South High School. "We added a buffer to intensify it, and we used a thermocycler to synthesize the DNA. After the weekend, we'll put it back in that little electrophoresis chamber. We'll be able to see how long the base pairs are to see if we have the cut or uncut DNA, which then will tell us if we have the taster gene or not." The sophisticated laboratory techniques mirror those used in professional genetic testing facilities, providing students with authentic career preparation.

This genetics unit exemplifies the high-level coursework available through the district's academy programs, which offer specialized pathways for students interested in specific career fields. The Health Systems Academy prepares students for careers in healthcare and biomedical sciences through rigorous coursework and hands-on learning experiences that develop both technical skills and scientific understanding.

Current eighth grade students will have the opportunity to explore all academy offerings at the College and Career Expos scheduled for October 28th at each high school. Academy applications open on November 3rd, with Media Academy and STEM Academy available to incoming freshmen. The district's commitment to providing diverse educational pathways ensures that students can pursue their interests and career goals while receiving a strong foundation for post-secondary success.
