First graders in Ms. Knight's class at G. Stanley Hall Elementary closed out the school year with a hands-on keepsake project that has become a beloved annual tradition — literally. Each of Ms. Knight's students selected their own color and spot to press their handprint onto a white dress that their teacher will wear on the last day of school. After printing, students signed their handprints, creating a wearable record of the class they helped build.

The tradition carries deep personal meaning for Ms. Knight, who traces its origins to her own family's history with a beloved educator. "I began this tradition because my mother's fourth-grade teacher did something similar, which left a lasting, meaningful impression on her," Ms. Knight explained. "I have continued it because it beautifully reflects how much each student impacts me as a teacher, helping me learn and grow alongside them every single year."

For Ms. Knight, the dress is more than a year-end art project — it is a growing keepsake that captures the unique fingerprint of each school year. As her former students advance through the grade levels, the dress serves as a visible reminder of every class she has taught, and perhaps one day, the faces behind those handprints will return to walk past her during Grad Walk celebrations.

The tradition reflects the kind of relationship-centered teaching that defines the culture at G. Stanley Hall Elementary, where the bond between teacher and student is recognized as central to the learning experience. It is the sort of moment that students and their families are likely to remember long after the school year ends.
