Elementary schools across Papillion La Vista Community Schools celebrated a significant academic milestone last week as students and staff marked the 100th day of the school year. For the district's youngest learners in kindergarten through second grade, this mid-year marker provided opportunities for creative, curriculum-integrated celebrations centered entirely around the number 100.

The 100th day of school serves as more than just a festive occasion—it's a carefully designed instructional opportunity woven throughout the elementary curriculum. Students participated in activities including counting by tens to reach 100, completing challenges involving 100 repetitions of various movements, and engaging in reading and writing prompts that incorporated the milestone number. These activities reinforce foundational mathematics concepts including place value, skip counting, addition strategies, and number sense while building physical literacy and literacy skills across content areas.

For teachers, the 100th day provides a natural checkpoint to assess student progress and celebrate how much learning has occurred since the beginning of the school year. The colorful, hands-on activities help young students visualize large quantities, practice counting strategies, and develop number fluency in engaging ways that make abstract mathematical concepts concrete and memorable. The celebration also builds classroom community and creates positive associations with academic achievement.

With more than half the school year complete, PLCS elementary students have demonstrated remarkable growth and continue building the strong foundational skills that will support their educational journey throughout their years in the district.
