Board Meeting Bulletin, 8/25/2025
Christopher Villarre

Welcome to our Board Meeting Bulletin series, where we highlight key takeaways from each board meeting to keep our community informed and engaged with the latest developments in our school district.

Strategic Planning Progress: Dr. Shureen Seery presented draft goals for the 2025-2030 strategic plan developed during June's Community Advisory Council meeting. Two main themes emerged: "Perseverance to Purpose" (focusing on rigorous academics and pathway planning) and "Breaking Barriers" (emphasizing engagement for all students). Action teams will be formed to develop specific steps, with final goals expected by late October.

Enrollment Growth: Dr. Kati Settles reported the district is up 48 students overall (12,117 total) with K-12 enrollment up 84 students compared to last year. All three growth positions authorized by the board have been utilized due to increasing primary grade enrollment. The district continues to face staffing needs, particularly for paraprofessionals.

Foundation's Major Initiative: Lee Denker announced the launch of the "Growing Up Greater" campaign to raise $10 million for a new Community Engagement Center. Located north of the district office, the facility will house the Community Closet, Kids Club headquarters, a training/event center, and Foundation offices. With $7 million already committed, construction is planned for fall 2026 with opening targeted for 2028. Kids Club currently serves 1,245 students across 16 sites.

Financial Actions: The board approved the sale of 1.17 acres near Anderson Grove Elementary to Foundations Development LLC for $35,000, with proceeds going to the Special Building Fund. Additionally, the board passed a resolution to increase the base growth percentage by up to 3% for property tax authority, citing rising costs including the new elementary school opening in 2026, reduced federal Title I funding, and increased transportation needs.
