Welcome to our Board Meeting Bulletin series, where we highlight key takeaways from each board meeting to keep our community informed and engaged with the latest developments in our school district.

Foundation Field Track Replacement: The Board approved the Foundation Field track replacement project, awarding the contract to Nemaha Sports Construction for $1,183,400.80. The project, funded through the Special Building Fund, will begin after the school year ends in late May with a target completion before the start of football season in August. The contract includes a $1,500 per day late fee to help ensure the project stays on schedule. Both bids received came in below the engineer's estimate of approximately $1.3 million. This project wraps up the district's recent effort to replace all of its track facilities.

2026-2031 Strategic Plan Adopted: The Board formally adopted the goals and objectives for the district's new five-year strategic plan. The plan was shaped in part by a 42-member community advisory committee made up of students, parents, teachers, administrators, business leaders, and local elected officials. The six strategic goals will guide district priorities through 2031, with implementation teams now being formed to develop actionable steps and timelines for each goal.

Legislative Update: Assistant Superintendent Brett Richards provided an update on the current legislative session, highlighting two bills of particular concern to the district. LB 1219 would impose a hard 2% cap on property tax increases, which district leaders say could significantly limit the ability to maintain staffing levels and competitive teacher salaries, especially as state aid to the district has declined substantially in recent years. LB 1050, a reading retention bill, would require students who don't meet certain benchmarks to be held back before fourth grade, removing that decision from parents. The district has submitted formal comments outlining concerns with LB 1050. Board members have been actively meeting with local state senators to discuss the potential impact of both bills on the district's operations and budget.
