Board Meeting Bulletin, 2/9/2026
Christopher Villarre

Welcome to our Board Meeting Bulletin series, where we highlight key takeaways from each board meeting to keep our community informed and engaged with the latest developments in our school district.

American Civics Curriculum Hearing: The board held its annual American Civics Curriculum Hearing, reviewing how students across the district are learning about government, history, geography, and economics. The district's social studies curriculum follows the 2019 Nebraska standards, ensuring students develop the knowledge and skills needed for informed citizenship. Looking ahead, the Nebraska Department of Education has begun working on updated standards that will eventually come before the board for adoption.

State of Schools Report: District students continue to outperform their peers across Nebraska in reading, math, and science. The 2024-2025 results show strong achievement on standardized tests, with the district maintaining its "Great" classification under the state's accountability system. Nearly all students—96.15%—graduated within four years, demonstrating the district's focus on helping every student cross the finish line. The MAP assessment, which tracks individual student growth throughout the year, shows encouraging results at every grade level. Kindergarteners arrive ready to learn, and students continue building on that foundation all the way through high school.

Policy 1000 Series Updates: The board discussed updating the threshold for major fundraising projects from $50,000 to $65,000. This change reflects the reality that costs for things like playground equipment and digital signs have increased significantly in recent years. The board also began its annual review of policy 20000 series related to district administration.

Staff Device Refresh: Technology moves fast, and keeping teachers equipped with reliable laptops is essential for effective instruction. The district discussed replacing staff devices at the high schools, IDEAL, the Early Childhood Center, and central office. Working on a four-year replacement cycle helps ensure teachers have computers with good battery life and enough storage to handle the latest software. The district plans to use Apple financing for the purchase, with a vote expected at the February 23 meeting.

Springfield Platteview Property Transfer: The board reviewed a property transfer request for approximately 75 acres in the Shadow Creek North development, located southwest of 84th and Schram Road. This transfer is part of the district's ongoing boundary adjustment agreement with Springfield Platteview Community Schools. Students in this area will typically attend Patriot Elementary.
