Welding Students Practice GMAW Skills, 4/1/2025
Christopher Villarre

Students in the welding program at Papillion La Vista High School are currently mastering Gas Metal Arc Welding (GMAW), commonly known as MIG welding, an essential skill in modern fabrication and manufacturing industries. The class is practicing various foundational techniques, focusing specifically on flat butt, lap, and tee joints that form the basis of many welding applications.

Instructor Mr. Covington has been guiding students through proper welding techniques while recently introducing them to plasma cutting operations. This additional skill will prove valuable as students prepare for their upcoming project—constructing birdhouses that will incorporate both their welding and cutting abilities.

The birdhouse project represents a practical application of the skills students have been developing, allowing them to combine technical knowledge with hands-on fabrication experience. By working on a tangible project, students can see immediate results from their learning while developing problem-solving skills essential in technical trades.

Throughout all activities in the welding program, safety remains the top priority. Students adhere to rigorous safety standards that mirror industry expectations, including proper use of personal protective equipment and following established safety protocols for each piece of equipment.

The PLCS skilled and technical trades courses exemplify the district's commitment to providing students with career-relevant education. By offering access to professional-grade equipment under proper supervision, the district prepares students for potential career pathways in welding, fabrication, manufacturing, and related fields.

These hands-on learning experiences provide multiple benefits: preparation for immediate entry into the workforce following graduation, foundation for further technical education, or applicable skills for personal projects. With the current high demand for skilled welders across many industries, students completing this program have excellent opportunities for employment in Nebraska and beyond.
