Tara Heights Fifth Graders Conclude Renaissance Unit with Hands-On Activities, 2/25/2025
Christopher Villarre

Fifth grade students at Tara Heights Elementary recently wrapped up their Core Knowledge Language Arts (CKLA) unit on the Renaissance with a series of engaging hands-on learning stations.

Students rotated through various activities that brought the Renaissance period to life. They constructed domes inspired by Italian architect Brunelleschi, working together to build intricate structures using colorful building materials. To experience the unique challenges faced by Michelangelo while painting the Sistine Chapel, students drew art mounted under their desks, helping them appreciate the physical demands of this historic artistic achievement.

For their final rotation, students exercised their creativity by modernizing Leonardo da Vinci's iconic Mona Lisa. This activity allowed them to apply their understanding of Renaissance art while adding their own contemporary interpretations to one of history's most famous paintings.

Teachers observed that the hands-on approach significantly enhanced student engagement and retention of Renaissance concepts. The classroom was filled with collaboration and creativity as students worked in small groups at each station, discussing Renaissance themes while developing their projects.

These interactive activities helped students connect with Renaissance concepts while developing skills in architecture, art, and creative interpretation—bringing history to life through experiential learning that will leave a lasting impression.
