Rumsey Station Second Graders Experience Living History, 3/27/2025
Christopher Villarre

Second grade students at Rumsey Station Elementary stepped back in time through an immersive living history experience designed to bring their War of 1812 curriculum vividly to life. Rather than simply reading about historical events, students actively engaged with the past through interactive stations led by skilled historical reenactors, creating memorable learning experiences that connected academic content with tangible historical practices.

The educational program featured three distinct learning stations, each staffed by a costumed living history actor portraying a different role from the early 19th century. At one station, students encountered a historically accurate representation of a school teacher from the era, learning about educational practices, materials, and expectations for children during the War of 1812 period.

Another station introduced students to the domestic arts of the period through interactions with a bread maker demonstrating historical food preparation techniques, while military life during the War of 1812 was represented at a third station by a reenactor portraying a lieutenant from the 6th infantry. Students learned about military organization, equipment, challenges, and experiences of soldiers during this significant conflict in American history.

Throughout the day, students rotated through additional activities including historical reading materials and flag-making projects that reinforced their learning while providing opportunities for creative engagement with historical concepts. This living history program exemplifies Rumsey Station Elementary's commitment to experiential learning approaches that make history accessible and engaging for young students.
