On a recent field trip, students from Papillion La Vista Community Schools' (PLCS) Naval Junior Reserve Officers Training Corps (NJROTC) program spent a day at Camp Ashland military base, engaging in team-building activities and leadership challenges.
The day was designed to provide cadets with hands-on experiences that reinforce the NJROTC's core mission of developing leadership skills and fostering good citizenship. Activities were split between two main areas: a rappelling wall and an obstacle course.
"This whole day is meant to be a bonding day, build some leadership traits, and just have fun," explained Aiden McClure, PLHS cadet. The obstacle course, in particular, emphasized teamwork and communication skills as cadets worked together to overcome physical challenges.
Participants reported positive experiences from the day's events. "We've been working a lot with teamwork, getting to know the people around you, and trying new things," shared Kennedy Lile, PLSHS cadet.
The PLCS NJROTC program offers various teams and activities throughout the year, including drill, drones, and marksmanship. These teams provide additional opportunities for cadets to develop and practice leadership skills in different contexts.
While the NJROTC program can serve as a stepping stone for students interested in military careers, program leaders emphasized that there is no obligation to join the armed forces after participation.
The Camp Ashland experience exemplifies the PLCS NJROTC's commitment to providing valuable, hands-on learning opportunities for students. By combining physical challenges with leadership development, the program aims to equip students with skills that will benefit them in various aspects of their lives, whether they pursue military careers or not.
