Eight PLCS elementary schools recently participated in two Unified Basketball tournaments, bringing together students with and without disabilities to promote inclusion through shared competition experiences.
Unified sports programs foster understanding and friendship by creating opportunities for all students to participate together on the same teams. The events were held at Papillion Middle School and La Vista Middle School with support from PLCS high school student volunteers who helped referee games, manage scoreboards, and assist participants.
Staff members from all participating schools, including Anderson Grove, Ashbury, Carriage Hill, G. Stanley Hall, Golden Hills, La Vista West, Parkview Heights, and Prairie Queen Elementary, collaborated to make the events successful. Their dedication to inclusive programming was evident throughout the planning and execution of the tournaments.
Parents and families attended in large numbers, cheering on all participants and creating an atmosphere of community support. Many commented on the positive impact they observed as students formed new friendships across traditional boundaries.
The tournaments highlighted the district's commitment to inclusive programming, with the joyful atmosphere and new friendships formed during the events demonstrating the positive impact of inclusive activities within the school community. PLCS continues to prioritize these opportunities that benefit all students through shared experiences.
