Eighth Grade HAL Students Explore Culinary Arts with Local Businesses, 3/21/2025
Christopher Villarre

Eighth grade students in the High Ability Learner (HAL) program received hands-on culinary experience this week through innovative partnerships with Papillion businesses, providing them with real-world applications of various academic subjects including chemistry, mathematics, and business management.

The educational experience began at Talus restaurant, where students were immersed in a professional kitchen environment under the expert guidance of owner Chef Aron Mackevicius. Rather than simply observing, the students actively participated in the complete culinary process from initial preparation to final plating. Working in the closed kitchen, they learned proper food handling techniques, cooking methods, and presentation skills while creating savory dishes that they later enjoyed tasting themselves.

The culinary learning journey expanded beyond cooking techniques into the business aspects of the food industry as students concluded their tour at Happy Mango Bakery. There, owner Megan Shonka welcomed them into her establishment to discuss the challenges and rewards of small business ownership and management. This segment provided valuable insights into entrepreneurship, financial planning, marketing strategies, and the day-to-day operations required to run a successful culinary business.

This comprehensive experience was made possible through coordination by PLCS Cooperation BEST, a program dedicated to facilitating meaningful connections between Papillion La Vista Community Schools students and community resources. The program exemplifies the district's commitment to providing students with educational opportunities that extend beyond traditional classroom settings and connect academic concepts with practical applications in the community.
