Board Meeting Bulletin: November 25, 2024
Christopher Villarre

Welcome to our Board Meeting Bulletin series, where we highlight key takeaways from each board meeting to keep our community informed and engaged with the latest developments in our school district.

EL Program Growth: The district's English Learner program at PLHS has experienced remarkable growth, expanding from just 2 students in 2008 to 51 current students. The program now serves students speaking 12 different languages, with Spanish speakers forming the largest group, alongside Vietnamese, French, and nine other languages. Led by teacher Leah Peach, the program provides three levels of English language development classes while ensuring students meet all standard graduation requirements. The program demonstrates the district's commitment to supporting its increasingly diverse student population.

2025-26 School Calendar Approved: The board approved the comprehensive calendar for the next academic year, featuring 173 student days for elementary and 175 for secondary students. The calendar includes 187 teacher days plus three additional days for parent-teacher conferences. School will begin August 12, 2025, for K-7 and 9th grade students (with remaining grades starting August 13), and end May 22, 2026. Spring break is scheduled for March 16-20, 2026, with built-in weather make-up days planned for May 26-28.

Bond Project Updates: BCDM Architects presented detailed plans for two major 2023 bond projects. The PLHS South addition includes a 1,200-square-foot storage expansion and a 2,800-square-foot flexible classroom space, along with significant theater renovations including stage flooring, lighting, and sound equipment upgrades. Bell Elementary will receive comprehensive security upgrades including a reconfigured secure entrance, plus modernized learning spaces with improved lighting, technology, and finishes throughout. Both projects will commence in spring 2025.

Offutt AFB Progress: Colonel Kolesiak reported significant progress in the base's flood recovery efforts, with two major projects completed including the Event Center and base lake reconstruction. Three additional projects will be completed within six months, marking important milestones in restoring facilities lost to the 2019 flood that affected one-third of the base. The base continues its strong partnership with district schools, particularly in supporting military families during the winter permanent change of station season and encourages participation in the Impact Aid program to support district resources.

Athletic & Activity Excellence: The PLHS South Girls Volleyball team continues their dynasty, securing their fourth Class A state championship in six years. Under Coach Katie Tarman, named last year's Omaha World Herald Female Coach of the Year, the team dominated the state tournament without dropping a single set. Meanwhile, PLHS Student Council received major recognition at the 2024 State Convention, earning the Outstanding Student Council Award. Patrick O'Connor achieved All-State Council honors, while sophomore Lexi Souza was recognized as an Emerging Leader for her outstanding character and leadership potential.
