Welcome to our Board Meeting Bulletin series, where we highlight key takeaways from each board meeting to keep our community informed and engaged with the latest developments in our school district.
Board Recognition Week: At this special January meeting, we celebrated our Board of Education members who volunteer countless hours to serve our students and community. Board members receive no compensation for their service, yet dedicate significant time attending meetings, serving on committees, and participating in school events. Students and staff from across the district shared special thank you messages and artwork to show their appreciation for our board's dedication to educational excellence.
Teacher Contract Approved for Next Year: The board approved next year's teacher agreement, which includes pay increases and improved benefits for our educators. The package includes raising starting teacher pay to $40,750 and maintaining comprehensive health insurance options. Teachers will also have more flexibility with personal leave and expanded bereavement leave support.
Supporting Our Military Families: The board unanimously approved a resolution affirming the district's commitment to military-connected families. The resolution recognizes the unique challenges faced by military families, declares steadfast support for military-connected families within our school community, and commits to maintaining and enhancing programs that support military students and their families. Our district is proud to serve one of Nebraska's largest military student populations, and we currently have two Purple Star designated schools - Anderson Grove Elementary and PLSHS.
Bell Elementary Renovation Moving Forward: The board approved a $2,889,500 contract with Genesis Contracting Group to renovate Bell Elementary. The comprehensive project includes upgrading the front entrance with enhanced security features, modernizing learning spaces, and making other building improvements. Construction will begin this summer and is expected to continue over two summers to ensure minimal disruption to learning.
Bond Projects Moving Forward: Great progress continues on our 2023 bond projects across the district. Five schools will complete their improvements this coming fall: Hickory Hill, Tara Heights, Trumble Park, Park View Heights, and our new Young Adult Transition Program building. Our community can see significant progress at the new elementary school site on Lincoln Street, where walls are now going up quickly.
Legislative Update: Tim Gay, our district's legislative representative, shared an update on the new legislative session. With 715 bills introduced this year, our district is closely watching education-related proposals and working to ensure our local legislators understand how potential changes could impact our students and schools. Mr. Gay noted that having bills spread over more hearing days this session will allow for better public input and discussion of education issues.
