Board Meeting Bulletin, 7/10/2025
Christopher Villarre

Welcome to our Board Meeting Bulletin series, where we highlight key takeaways from each board meeting to keep our community informed and engaged with the latest developments in our school district.

Student Fees Hearing and 2025-26 Adjustments: The board conducted its annual student fees hearing, approving modest increases including a 5-cent rise in breakfast and lunch prices due to rising food commodity costs. The district provided 1,911 fee waivers in 2024-25, up from 1,680 the previous year, ensuring students qualifying for free and reduced lunch can participate in all activities regardless of financial circumstances. Key changes include school-owned instrument rentals increasing from $50 to $75 due to maintenance costs, graduation cap and gown fees standardized at $65 for both high schools, and AP testing fees aligned with College Board pricing.

Elementary 17 Naming Discussion: The board began discussions on naming the new elementary school opening in fall 2026, with two finalists emerging from an extensive community process. Lincoln View Elementary honors both the geographic location near Lincoln Road and Nebraska's governmental heritage, while Granite Elementary reflects the school's location in the Granite Creek subdivision and symbolizes strength and stability. Board members expressed support for both names, with several leaning toward Lincoln View for its uniqueness and historical significance. A final decision will be made at the July 28 board meeting.

Policy Updates and Compliance: The board approved updates to the 5000 series student policies, incorporating recent legislative changes including new requirements for student surveys and parental rights. The 2025-26 student handbooks were also approved, reflecting these policy changes and ensuring compliance with state regulations. The district presented its annual Americanism and Multiculturalism statements of assurance, with principals signing statements acknowledging their responsibilities for elements such as the Pledge of Allegiance and multicultural curriculum review.

Young Adult Transition Program Opening: The district is preparing to open its new Young Adult Transition Program facility, serving approximately 30 students aged 18-21. Superintendent Rikli expressed particular excitement about this 2023 bond project, calling it potentially "the finest facility of its type in the state." This specialized program will provide enhanced services for students transitioning to adult life and independence.

Upcoming School Year Preparations: The first day of school approaches quickly on Tuesday, August 12, 2025, with a half-day schedule for most students. The Foundation Gala is scheduled for Saturday, August 16, and the All Staff Kickoff has been moved from Warner Field to Foundation Field on August 7. The district concluded a successful summer school program and continues progress on 2023 bond initiatives across multiple facilities.
