Remote Learning FAQ
Due to the volume of remote learning questions via email and phone we have put together this FAQ. We want your questions answered and we felt this is the fastest way to accomplish that goal. If you have a question that is not answered here, please email Communications@PLCSchools.org or call 402-537-6200 and give them that question so we can add it with the answer.
Q: What if I missed the deadline to enroll my child(ren) in the remote learning program?
A: Enrollment for the remote learning program closed on Friday, July 31st. Currently we are determining the staffing and the course offerings for the remote program based on the students enrolled. No new applications will be accepted. The only potential exception to the deadline may be for families that are brand new to the school district or if there is a change in medical circumstances.
Q: If the schools have to close again but we have chosen remote learning what will happen with the remote learners?
A: The remote learning program will continue as planned through the semester. If the school has to move to remote learning, they will run parallel with the remote learning program, but not change it.
Q: If we chose the in-person option and the case counts continue to increase or there is a positive case in our child's classroom and we have to pull them out of school, are they automatically enrolled in the Remote Learning opton or how does that change occur?
A: If there is a health concern for a class or a school, the entire class or school may have to go to a remote learning option. If that is the case it will be a separate program from the remote program being signed up for by July 31. If a classroom is moved to remote they will be moved with their entire class and will keep their classroom teacher as their remote teacher.
Q: If we registered, should we receive a confirmation email?
A: Yes. Except for those that registered the first day. After receiving several questions we did establish an automatic confirmation email. Everyone that registered after the first day should receive a confirmation email.
Q: If a parent starts in person school and decides it's not safe for their kid can we switch to remote before the end of the semester?
A: The remote learning program is for the entire semester. Students can only switch to the remote learning program at the end of first semester. Exceptions may be granted if there is a change in their circumstance. If there are health issues in the school or a particular classroom the entire school or classroom may go remote but that would be separate from the remote program. If the person program needs to go remote those students will learn remotely from their current teacher.
Q: If my child is currently enrolled in honors & AP classes and chooses remote learning can he get back into those classes if he comes back in the second semester?
A: When a student enrolls back into the in person program at the school from the remote program, they will work with a counselor to determine their schedule. Students will be placed according to their needs. We know that it is good for students, particularly our college bound students, to take AP courses. We are going to work with them to get them on that track.
Q: Will all students from the same family be required to do remote if 1 child chooses to?
A: No. You can enroll only the children in your household that you would like to be in the remote learning program and the other children in your household can attend school in person.
Q: If we do in person learning for the first semester, can we choose to do remote learning the second semester if things do not improve in our area?
A: Yes. PLCS will send out communication to parents as we get closer to 2nd semester and give families the option to continue with the remote learning program or move to in-person learning at the school.
Q: It has been mentioned several times that the teachers are still being identified. Does this mean that the planning, scheduling, and creating of the program is still in progress and not already clearly defined?
A: Yes. We can not set the number of teachers until we know the number of students that are enrolled. That is why the registration deadline is July 31.
Q: How many children will be assigned to each teacher?
A: This will depend on the number of students that enroll and the number of staff that can be hired.
Q: Will it be no harm grading? Or pass/fail?
A: The remote learning program will have grades just like if they are in-person at school. Students will get feedback on their work and grades. It will not be the no-harm approach that it was in the spring.
Q: How many classes are required aside from the core classes?
A: At the elementary and middle school level, the classes will focus on the core curriculum including: Language Arts, math, science and social studies. There will also be some social emotional learning. At the elementary all specials will be offered in some capacity. There will be limited offerings of elective classes at the middle school. At the high school, a student’s schedule will be designed based on what they need to graduate.
Q: Would AP classes taken through the University of NE high school be able to be transferred to his home high school?
A: All credit transfers are reviewed by the high school counselors and placed on the transcript accordingly.
Q:Will remote students be eligible to be included in the honor roll?
Q: Why is there such a difference between the course offerings in person versus remote learning program?
A: Logistically, it’s not possible to offer the full course offering for remote students that in-person students receive. There is not the availability of staff to teach that many courses for a small number of students. We had to prioritize the most critical courses needed at each level.
Q: What curriculum will be used at the elementary level for remote learning?
A: Remote learning program teachers will use the same curriculum that teachers in the schools are using. It might look a little different because it needs to be adapted to be taught virtually, but the concepts are the same.
Q: What curriculum will be used?
A: The School District Curriculum will be used in the remote program as well.
Q: Will honors classes be offered in the Remote Learning Program?
A: Honors and AP classes will not be offered in the remote learning program.
Q: If my student is participating in the in-person learning at school and is required to quarantine for 14 days, what learning opportunities will be available during those 14 days?
A: It would be just like it has always been. If a child is sick, the teacher will work directly with your child to get them the information they are missing and help them complete their work.
Q: Will standardized testing occur for remote elementary students? If so, how?
A: Yes, we are currently working on what the model will look like, but students will need to complete testing requirements.
Q: What level of classes will be available? What about electives?
A: Elementary: learning will focus on social emotional learning, reading, writing, math, science, and social studies. Middle: Core subjects will be taught at both 7th and 8th grade. This includes, English language arts, math, science, social studies. A few electives including social emotional learning will be offered. Band and chorus will not be offered. High School: General level core classes will be offered. Some elective courses will be offered using online programs.
Q: For those thinking about remote learning: is there a way for families to supplement electives like PE, art, or music? If yes, how would they go about getting those approved or transferred if/when they go back to in person learning so they can do the best they can continue to stay on track?
A: If families want to be approved for homeschool they need to apply through the Nebraska Department of Education.
Q: I would like my senior to do remote learning due to a medical issue in our household. She is currently enrolled in a PE class and an AP class. Will those classes transfer to ones that are offered in the remote plan?
A: The high school will take a look at your child’s schedule and what they need to graduate and adapt their schedule to fit the course offerings in the remote learning program.
Q: Will assignments get posted somewhere for students to have access to them if forgotten or absent during remote learning?
A: Assignments will be given to students through their remote learning teachers and can be different depending on the class. Just like a classroom teacher, the remote learning teachers will establish communication systems for families to know what assignments are and how students are doing.
Q: What platform are you intending to use? Padlet etc.? Youtube? Will classes be on Zoom, or Skype, or something different?
A: It will be primarily via zoom, and some SeeSaw and Google classroom.
Q:Will the students be given physical worksheets and workbooks or will we be printing everything out?
A: This is a remote program and will be done primarily online. However, teachers will work with individual family situations if documents need to be printed.
Q: How far in advance will lessons and planning be given? Is there a long-term plan, or will we be working week to week?
A: This would be similar to the in person program. Some assignments may be for a week or several days and others may have to be completed that day. The timeline will be determined by the teachers and dependent on the type of course and assignment.
Q: If my daughter were to go to school in-person and was supposed to get out at noon, will it be the same with the remote learning plan?
A: Schedules for high school students will be arranged based on the courses they need for graduation. Once the students are enrolled and courses are determined the students specific schedule will be assigned.
Q: What does the remote program look like for a kindergartener? Will my child be on a zoom call all day?
A: Students should plan a full day of learning at all ages with an hour break for lunch. The exact schedule for the day will be determined once students are placed in a class. Generally speaking it will be a combination of direct instruction from the teacher over zoom, small group instruction, maybe some one on one instruction and time for students to work on class projects. Attendance will be taken and students will be expected to be online during their scheduled times.
Q: Will there be breaks built in the remote learning day?
A: There will be a break for lunch. The rest of the day, students will need to be online or completing assignments other breaks will be built in as needed.
Q: What is a typical schedule for an elementary student?
A: Students should plan a full day of learning at all ages with a break for lunch. The exact schedule for the day will be determined once students are placed in a class. It will look similar to the regular school day. Generally speaking it will be a combination of direct instruction from the teacher over zoom, small group instruction, maybe some one on one instruction and time for students to work on class projects. Attendance will be taken and students will be expected to be online during their scheduled times.
Q: What is a typical schedule for a middle school & high school students?
A: Students should plan a full day of learning at all ages with a break for lunch. The exact schedule for the day will be determined once students are placed in a class. Generally speaking, each course taught may be 50-60 minutes with breaks between. It will be a combination of direct instruction from the teacher over zoom, small group instruction, maybe some one on one instruction and time for students to work on class projects. Attendance will be taken and students will be expected to be online during their scheduled times.
Access to resources/programs/classes
Q: Will you be offering laptops to all PLCS remote learning students?
A: PLCS has ordered a lot of new devices. However those devices are back ordered and will not be here for the start of the school year. Until we receive the new computers, very limited technology will be available for families. Priority will be given to seniors and those with the greatest need.
Q: Will remote learning students have access to a guidance counselor if they need it?
A: Absolutely. We are making social and emotional learning a key component both in person and remote learning. If a student needs assistance it will be provided virtually for our remote students. Just reach out to the child’s teacher and he or she can get a counselor involved.
Q: My son has been homeschooling and taking a few classes at the middle school. Can he take band at the school and do Spanish and Enrichment 2 remotely?
A: Homeschool students that take electives at PLCS schools will need to choose either in-person learning or the remote learning program. Band and Spanish are not offered at the middle school as part of the remote learning program, so he would need to do all elective classes in person at the school.
Q: For the remote plan, would it be possible for the families to continue to stay somewhat connected with their schools by at least getting communication, newsletters, etc ? (for the social emotional aspect)
A: Students enrolled in the remote plan will be removed from their home school and added to a remote learning program and all communication will come from that program. Social and emotional learning will be incorporated into the remote program as well.
Q: Would children in the remote learning program still be able to come to the school to participate in their IEP, band, etc?
A: All PLCS students, regardless of disability status, will be given the option of participating in the Remote Learning Program. If a student's IEP team or Section 504 Committee has determined that the student's disability requires him/her to participate in the Remote Learning Program as an educational placement decision (as opposed to a family's preference), the IEP team or Section 504 Committee can also determine on a case-by-case basis what educational and extracurricular experiences are appropriate for that student. Similarly, if the parents of a student with a disability elects to have their student participate in the Remote Learning Program, the relevant team or committee will meet to create a plan based on that placement. The general rule will be that students who opt to participate in the Remote Learning Program will not be permitted to participate in activities and athletics; band and chorus; the academy programs; and, via distance learning, AP and Honors Classes. However, a student's IEP team or Section 504 Committee could decide to allow an exception to that general rule if it would be necessary to provide the student with a disability with a free, appropriate public education. That decision will be based on the individual needs of the student as determined by the relevant team or committee.
Q: With students on IEPs, will they lose their case manager at their home school if they do the remote learning?
A: This will depend on the remote learning enrollment numbers at each school. However, students with IEPs and 504s will continue to receive services.
Q: Is there a separate school supply list for remote students?
Q: Will remote learning seniors get to walk with their home high school for graduation?
A: Yes. Graduating seniors will still get to participate in Graduation with their home high school.
Q: Does the remote plan apply to preschool?
A: Preschool is different. If you are currently enrolled in the PLCS preschool program and you have questions, please reach you to the Papillion La Vista Early Childhood Center at 402-514-3243.
Q: What online classroom rules will be put into place? For example, will students be allowed to eat during class? Will students have rules about dress code, a behavioral code etc. How will these rules be enforced?
A: We would expect students to follow all rules of the code of conduct handbook book that in person students are expected to abide by.
