English Learners
The English Learners Program (EL) in Papillion La Vista Community Schools is designed to teach skills and strategies that improve the reading, writing, speaking, and listening of non-English speaking students or students whose first language is a language other than English.
In order to meet the unique needs of each student, EL offers a continuum of services. EL services are delivered in the classroom and in pullout sessions through the use of sheltered instruction, content-based EL, reading support, and language acquisition support. At the high school, Papillion La Vista collaborates with Ralston Public Schools to provide a Newcomer Program for students who have recently arrived in the United States.
Papillion La Vista Community Schools operates EL sites at G. Stanley Hall, Golden Hills, Parkview Heights, Carriage Hill, and La Vista West elementary schools. EL support is also provided at La Vista Middle School and Papillion La Vista High School. EL teachers communicate regularly with parents, and students exit the program when assessments and teacher recommendations indicate that they can be successful in school without English language support.
